Best Football Manager 2017 mods so far

Sports Interactive’s Football Manager series (once known as Championship Manager) is the Chosen One of sports management games. Rarely does its year-on-year instalment fall from Steam’s top ten most played games list and while the latest edition, Football Manager 2017 [official site], isn’t exactly brimming with new features, it has finely tuned almost all of its existing ones – to the point where this season’s outing is one of the best in the series’ illustrious 14-year career. “I have been impressed; greatly impressed at times,” says Adam in his review.

Similar to the waves of players and personnel who switch employers each year, mods come and go with each passing iteration of FM. The following list gathers the best that are available so far for 2016/17’s incarnation – but we’ll be adding to this list as the season unfolds.

Escape futility for mere seconds with Personal Archipel

The weight of this world is a crushing pallet of personal breeze blocks, hanging around our collective necks like cursed talismans. Every day we try to lift ourselves to betterment, and every evening we find ourselves exhausted in a bed of toast crumbs and fatigue.

Here’s a tiny island made of colourful pixels!

Notes On A Patch: Is No Man’s Sky a better game now?

Back in September, when I was deep in the throes of my obsessional relationship with the peculiar No Man’s Sky, I wrote a Supporter post describing my dream patch notes. Clearly, when so many people have chosen to invest their misplaced personal anguish into the game, the spluttered response would be, “Well, pffpffpffff, how about NOT [MAKE A GAME UNLIKE THE GAME I WAS EXPECTING],” or some such. But rather than trying to look outraged, I hoped to lay down the details big and small that I’d want in order to improve a game which – despite all it lacked – had me in its hooks. So, now there’s been a big update! How many of my wishes have been granted?

Titanfall 2’s multiplayer is having a free weekend

Of the big three killshoots that we have seen vying for supremacy in the closing moments of hellyear 2016, Titanfall 2 [official site] has earned our respect the most. It has giant robots and magic boots, everything a growing FPS fan needs. If you didn’t pick it up in the recent silly sale, don’t fret, there’s still a chance to see if it’s worth the full price, because its multiplayer side will be free to try this weekend.

Getting axed in the neck in The Division’s Survival mode

The baseball bat guys got me again. Here I am, lying face down in the snow, surrounded by hooded and bloodthirsty punks, who smashed my bones until I died. It has been a hard life. I almost froze to death, scavenged the belongings of fallen players, and somehow reached the most dangerous part of blizzard-stricken New York all by myself. Now, I am dead. The anti-virals I was told to retrieve are less than ten yards away. This is The Division’s new survival mode. In many ways, it is what the shooter’s original Dark Zone should have been.

Oasis map, Nu Symmetra now in Overwatch test realm

Oasis - Overwatch

Oasis has arrived on Overwatch‘s public test realm – that’s the bit where new patches are deployed before they make it into the game proper. Oasis the game’s new control point map, rather than Oasis the band fronted by the brothers Gallagher. They’re not in the PTR. Well. They might be if they’re into Blizzard FPSs I suppose, typing “Don’t look back in anger LOL” into all chat. … [visit site to read more]

Loot Rascals is a colourful card-collecting roguelike

I’d never seen Loot Rascals [official site] before this morning and yet it seems to arrive fully-formed: it looks great, it looks fun, you can buy it now. Although it’s not fully-formed, and that’s even why you can buy it now: the Refinery Edition is so named because the game’s developers hope to use it to refine the game. There’s a cracking trailer below.

Have You Played… Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Not only did it allow you to throw your lightsaber across the room and electrocute a bunch of imbecile Stormtroopers until they fell into a big hole, it also spawned one of the most satisfying stories ever written about a videogame. Well done, Jedi Knight II. … [visit site to read more]

The Signal From Tölva: 9 mins of robo-spying, shooting

The Signal From Tolva

John previously described Big Robot’s The Signal From Tölva [official site] as “Far Cry meets a 1970s sci-fi book you’ve found in a charity shop.” I like that description, but I didn’t play the hands-on when I was at EGX earlier this year so I’ve been waiting for – just to pull an example out of thin air – nine minutes and twenty-two seconds of gameplay footage delivered via internet so I can take a proper peek. By total coincidence, this has just arrived so you can join me in my perusal! … [visit site to read more]

Wurm Online 1.3 update adds bees and beer

When Brendan recently visited Wurm Online, he found that the long-running fantasy MMO appeared to be on its last legs. In a world of structures built by players, most areas were deserted and decaying. That’s a real shame, because I had great experiences in Wurm Online back around 2010, and it remains an interesting game today. Good news, then! Version 1.3 was just released and adds a new recipe based meal system, a new rune system, and… bees.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition out now, free for owners of the original

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition [official site] is a terrible name. It’s the remastered edition of the original Darksiders, that brawly third-person action game about apocalyptic horse-fancier War, so I can see their thinking. But… no.

It is now out on PC though which is nice, and owners of the original can upgrade for free.

No Man’s Sky advertising complaint not upheld by ASA

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has decided not to uphold the complaints against No Man’s Sky’s Steam page. The regulatory body announced they were investigating the complaints in September but after consultation with both Valve and developers Hello Games they’re satisfied that the trailers, screenshots and text desriptions on the game’s Steam page did not breach the advertising code. I am not entirely satisfied.
