Payday 2 checks back into Mercy Hospital in the middle of Crimefest

It feels like Overkill’s anarchic cop-smashing shooter Payday 2 has gone off the rails in the best possible way. It used to be a game about robbing banks and jewellery stores. Now it’s a crossover with a half dozen film universes with an overarching plot that’s gone a little Da Vinci Code, now with nukes going off and mercenary armies to fight. Today’s update (part of their annual Crimefest community event) brings back the No Mercy heist, a Payday 1 map set in the hospital from Left 4 Dead, upgraded, remastered and given fresh new context. Plus, the game is super cheap right now.

Spooky, kooky and musical shmup Black Bird hatches today

A strange and inky crow-like creature rampages across the land, burning and killing all. A strange dreamlike world crumbles, and a nonsense vocal chorus summons fresh defenders to the field. Black Bird, latest from Onion Games (Million Onion Hotel, Dandy Dungeon) is a trip. While it arrived a little earlier on Switch, it feels only right that this strange little shmup makes its PC debut today, as it feels a bit like Sega’s old Fantasy Zone if it were directed by 90s Tim Burton. Wrap your head around that as you watch the ferociously fowl trailer below.

Chunky retro FPS Dusk rises from early access on December 10th

Channelling the dark spirits of Quake and Blood and packing a mean shotgun, Dusk is one of a handful of new but pointedly old-school shooters I’m excited for. It’s been in early access for a while, and you can play the first two episodes now, but the last, weirdest chapter of the game now has a release date – December 10th. While the final few levels are still in production, dev David Syzmanski and publisher New Blood let me take an early tour of its netherworld. It’s good, weird and playful stuff – take a peek at it for yourself in the new Halloween’y trailer below.

Cyber-cult RTS Re-Legion prays for an early 2019 release

Being a cyberpunk cult leader in Re-Legion doesn’t look easy – for starters, where do you get so many tastefully coordinated purple robes? And then there’s the problem of assembling your flock. Unlike most real-time strategy games, Ice Code’s upcoming RTS (now due in 2019’s first quarter) makes people your primary resource. You can’t just click on a barracks and magically spawn soldiers, right? You’ve got to convert them, then have them pray, train them and then begin upgrading them in worrying ways. Take a peek at some messy laser battles in the trailer below.

See Henry Cavill in costume as Geralt for Netflix’s Witcher

There are still many questions around Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Witcher–Will it be any good? Will Geralt be in that tub? Can I import my save into the telly? Is Geralt in the tub in every episode? Will he sack off quests to play Gwent down the pub? Does Geralt count as being in the tub in every episode if that’s just in the opening credits?–but they answered one today. Netflix shared a teeny clip of Man From U.N.C.L.E. star Henry Cavill as Geralt Of Rivia in a costume & makeup test, and it answers one question. How does Cavill handle Geralt’s quaff? Like he think potions turn you on real good.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey inventory: how to get the best weapons, legendary armour

Getting equipment in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is remarkably similar to how it was in Assassin’s Creed Origins. It takes a while before you start getting the good stuff, but before long you’ll be wielding some of the most powerful weapons and armour found in all of Ancient Greece. Legendary weapons and armour are the most highly coveted equipment to get, making a massive difference in how much damage you’re doing and how much you’re taking. Each equipment has very different perks and buffs you need to be aware of, so in this guide, we will explain how the inventory works and how to get the legendary armour and the best weapons.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Kythera Island: how to complete the side quests

Isolated towards the southern-most point, Kythera Island is deceptively small as it has a fair number of side quests to complete. Some include ousting a cult member, while others lead to a conflict with one of the mythical monsters of legend.  This guide will go over all the side quests for the region and how to complete them.

Kythera Island side quests guide

If you want to explore a different region, head back to our [cms-block] guide for a full list of the different regions. Alternatively, there is also the [cms-block] for everything else this massive game has to throw at you.

Purple Rain

A man will be interrogating another about the murder of his son. He asks you to investigate the scene of the crime. The warehouse is just along the beach, so go there and find the proof: A bracelet in the warehouse, the blood on the floor, and the murder weapon caked with dry blood.

Return to the father to rely what you found. You can accuse whomever, but the real murderer is the Leader of Kythera. He’ll then ask you to kill the leader to avenge his son. Do so to complete the quest.

Takes Drachmae to Make Drachmae

A vendor will be trying to drum up business for his adventure. You’ll need 1000 drachmae to start this quest, so pay up and head to the eastern archipelago of Kythera. It soon becomes clear that the chest is empty, so return to the vendor’s original location. He will run off, so feel free to kill him and get your money back, as well as a tidy bonus.

I, Diona

You may see this woman being attacked, so help her out before talking to her. She’ll ask you to escort her to the city to tell you information about the Cult of Kosmos. You will be attacked along the way, so kill any enemies you find. She’ll be reluctant to talk about the cult, but she’ll mention her sister who has been kidnapped.

All Bonds Will Break

Towards the east of the island near the dock, you’ll find the harbourmaster. Talk to him and he’ll ask you to rescue some people from the nearby warehouse. The fort is visible from where you speak to him, so head over there and rescue them.

Atoll Order

Once you’ve rescued all three, return to him and he’ll ask you to kill people on an island south of Kythera. They’re close to the shipwreck so swim from the southern most point of Kythera and kill the Captain to complete the quest. Your character will notice something amiss.

Pick Your Poison

In the ruins towards the centre of the island, you’ll see a satchel of poison hidden within, towards the highest building. It will be guarded by bandits, but they shouldn’t be much of a problem at this stage. Grab it and return to Diona for your reward.

The Handmaiden’s Story

Towards the north of the island, you’ll find a priestess who will tell you about a traitor in their midst. A handmaiden hasn’t returned from a spying mission. Head to the east of Pilgrim Hill to the farm to find some cultists standing over the handmaiden’s corpse. Kill them and retrieve the note for the priestess.

By the Fates

After completing all three of the previous quests, you’ll be asked to meet a handmaiden in a villa. Go there and talk to her to have Diona come to you. You may choose to seduce her at this point. It turns out that once she’s done, she’ll have some cultist soldiers attack you. Interrogate the handmaiden. Head to her sister by the altar to the north. Sadly, they’re identical twins, so you’ll need to decide which one is the real Diona. To save you some time, the one on the right is Diona, so choose her and kill her. Talk to the Priestess to finish the quest. If you kill the priestess by mistake, you’ll need to manually hunt down Diona, so be sure to get it right. She’ll also reveal some intel about a man called Melite.

Idiot Hunt

A civilian wants you to look for her husband who went hunting for Lynx. Head to the cave near the centre of the island where you’ll find a few Lynx. Hunt them down and enter the cave. Carry the man out of the cave and back to his wife for your reward.

A God Among Men

A peasant will ask for your help with the local priestesses harassing him. If you agree, the priestesses will threaten you, but leave you to it. Head the the fort towards the docks and liberate him. Return to him to find the civilian dead and the priestess standing over his corpse.

Left to Dye

Empedokles will ask you to find a disk a thief stole from him, he will be very close by, so defeat him and his guards. Return the disk and Empedokles will then address his people. This will unlock the quest Stairway to Olympos, which you can find out more about in our [cms-block] guide.

That’s all the side quests that we have so far for the region of Lakonia, but there are plenty of other regions that will need your help. Head on back to our [cms-block] guide for more information about another quest-line or another region’s set of side quests.

I miss the fake humans, but Fallout 76 feels like Fallout

“Every character you see is a real person,” said Todd Howard at E3, explaining the lack of traditional NPCs in Fallout 76. But I’m not so sure. Does Howard really expect me to believe that ‘CocktimusPrime’ isn’t waiting to greet everyone outside their vault? He’s there as I step into the light, his big, dumb name floating in front of a horizon that’s meant to elicit awe. And there’s no reason it shouldn’t. That sea of autumnal trees and distant storm clouds are lovely. Having winced at the wonky footage of the Xbox One beta last week I’m genuinely surprised at how pretty West Virginia is. Well, the bits of it that aren’t CocktimusPrime.

Bubsy: Paws On Fire! takes the rubbo bobcat autorunning

After years as a punchline, it seems Bubsy has again become an active series. And we’re supposed to accept that. We’re supposed to tell our children that’s the world we’ve created for them. Our children, who’ll grow up knowing Bubsy not from the astonishing Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits The James Turrell Retrospective but from collectathon platformers with awful puns. Our children. You tell my child, you tell them that one year after the release of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, publishers Accolade have announced Bubsy: Paws On Fire! This time, the developers stepping up are Choice Provisions, the makers of the BIT.TRIP games.

Halloween 2018 Special: Some lovely games!

Video games, you may have noticed, are often a little bit horrid. All sorts of naughtiness, and a distinct lack of people just being kind to one another. What are we like?! But fortunately there are games that make an exception to the potty-mouthed meanies that dominate, and today I celebrate them and their cuteness with a collection of lovely screenshots.
