Cyberwizards & Robobees In 13 Mins Of Cod Blops 3 Co-op

I'm a mechanical- I'm a mechanical- I'm a mechanical man.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 [official site] turns soldiers into cyberwizards with dominion over cyberbrains and robobees, but does that make the game much different from any other CoD, Blops or otherwise? For the first ten minutes of a new thirteen-minute gameplay trailer showing off four-player co-op, the answer appears to be no. Soldiers run along corridors in a sandy city and shout and shoot and there’s a cinematic where a man dies and oh it’s so very tragic. The final three minutes, however, venture into one of the boss battle arenas, and that looks a whole lot more fun.

Premature Evaluation: CrossCode

The game's tutorial largely takes place on a cargo ship, the Solar, captained by a jetpack wearing tar, who is full of slightly mangled but suitably salty language. This enjoyable seadog stereotype is a rather indelible one, and I suspect it persists in the cultural imagination because, for most of human history, the sea was a thing that would surely fucking kill you, and anybody who made a living dicking about on it had to be either fearlessly stupid or stupidly fearless.

Each week Marsh Davies jacks into the virtual battleground that is Early Access so that his spandex-clad avatar may wrestle with the digital monstrosities therein. This week he’s uploaded himself into CrossCode, a top down 16-bit-styled singleplayer ARPG set within a distant future MMO, where the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds have blurred.

It is a strange vision of the future in which the world’s number one entertainment involves me slapping a hedgehog to death with my balls. These balls are sadly just glowing projectiles, of course, aimed in 360 degrees and fired continuously if desired, ricocheting off walls to hit enemies and switches out of the line-of-sight – but the game does insist on referring to them as “your balls” in a way which is either deadpan mischief or minor mistranslation from the developers’ native German. It is but one of many mysteries in the intriguing world of CrossCode – and a rather natty combat system to boot.

Tale Of Tales (Probably) Stopping Making Games

After twelve years in games, it looks like Tale of Tales are calling it quits and looking to new artistic pastures. The duo behind such games as The Endless Forest, The Path, and Luxuria Superbia had hoped their latest, Sunset [official site], would have more mainstream appeal – and financial success. It sold only around 4,000 copies in its first month, not enough to cover costs.

ToT said over the weekend, “we don’t think we will be making videogames after this. And if we do, definitely not commercial ones.” I’d be sorry to see them go.

Wot I Think: Her Story

A camera records the statements that a woman makes to the police in relation to her missing husband. Years later, you sit at a computer and search through a video database by typing in keywords. The computer searches for the keywords in transcripts of the statements and returns up to five results. To dig deeper, you’ll have to make connections, combine words, play detective.

Her Story [official site] is a game about crime and investigation from Aisle and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories designer Sam Barlow, and it’s one of the best in its field.

Ghosts And Gravestones: New Perception Gameplay Video

The Deep End Games have released a new video of their Kickstarter baby Perception, a survival horror game starring a blind girl who must navigate a haunted house using echolocation. The new gameplay trailer comes just a few days before the end of the Kickstarter, with 10% of the goal amount still to be obtained. In the video we get to see more ghostly goings on, plus an indication that hearing may not always be believing.

I Kind Of Miss Dreadful Adventure Developer Cryo

One hundred and fifteen years ago, before Rock, Paper, Shotgun was a twinkle in Horace’s eye, I used to do the bulk of my writing in a magazine called PC Gamer. Now, I’ve no idea what’s happened to that mag since, but for ten years I kept it propped up with a two page budget section, and reviews of terrible, terrible adventure games. And most terrible of them all were the always-awful but ever-so-sincere productions of French publisher and developer, Cryo Interactive.

I Made A Willy And A Foo-Foo In LEGO Worlds

LEGO Worlds [official site] is TT Games’ attempt to scoop up some of that Minecraft action the kids love these days. And why not – it’s a natural fit for Lego (let’s forgo the capitalisation), and it’s about time there was a complete sandbox place to construct from licensed Lego blocks. Currently in a very early alpha version (you can read more in Marsh’s piece), it’s all single-player. But there’s plans to let it go multiplayer later in the alpha process, and with that comes some pretty tricky times for TT, Lego, and the pure of mind. People gonna build penises. I thought I’d have a go.
