Arika’s Fighting EX Layer is punching its way onto PC

Fighting EX Layer is making the dramatic leap from PS4 to PC to challenge Street Fighter once more. Lesser-known fighting devs Arika (creators of the underrated Street Fighter EX games) recently whipped up a bit of hype with this all-new game and its mostly-fresh cast, plus the surprise return of several Street Fighter EX characters. In a little teaser video posted to their YouTube channel last night, Arika let slip the existence of a Steam-bound PC version. They don’t know if it’ll be out this year, but it’ll definitely be 4k – go take a peek below.

Co-op space disaster party game Catastronauts is out now

Catastronauts‘s mash-up of FTL’s stressful space combat and Overcooked’s messy co-op is an inspired hybrid and a fit logical enough to satisfy even a Vulcan. Released today and made by Inertia Game Studios, it’s a co-op party game for one to four people, ideally huddled around a TV and free to shout at each other. As a crew of expendable and all-too-fragile redshirts (and other colours, but whatever), you’ve got to keep your ship functioning as it braves stellar dangers, fights hostile aliens and generally lands you in all kinds of trouble. Below, the launch trailer.

Roccat Suora review: An excellent budget mechanical keyboard

Why are the best gaming keyboards always so expensive? If you want a decent mechanical keyboard, you’re often looking at spending at least £100 / $100, if not significantly more if you want all those fancy RGB lighting effects to play with. It’s with a great sigh of relief, then, that I’ve got Roccat’s Suora on my desk today, which can be had for as little as £50 in the UK and around $80 in the US – and it’s really rather good.

Tactical backstabber I’m Not A Monster infiltrates under the guise of a free weekend

I’m Not A Monster is mostly about mind-games, sometimes shooting stuff with lasers and best when you’re a space-lizard chewing a friend’s face off. Developed by Cheerdealers and released yesterday, it’s a blend of XCOM-style tactics and parlour games like Werewolf. A crew of heroes try to rescue civilians from SPACE DANGER, but two of them are shapeshifting B-movie reptiles. Below, a launch trailer featuring a lot of (beeped) swearing, friendly fire, off-colour jokes and backstabbing which I guess is probably accurate to real online play. It’s also free to try until Sunday.

The Book Ritual is a game about shredding a book, made by someone I was at school with

At EGX this year, I went in the Leftfield Collection and I saw a shredder. A paper shredder with a face, and a big pile of books next to it. And a big pile of shredded books underneath it, too. So I ambled over, eager to destroy some literature. It was, it turned out, The Book Ritual, currently free on Itch. The Book Ritual is by Alistair Aitcheson. I did not know this when I sat down to play it. The identity of the developer is particularly relevant to me writing this, because I went to school with Alistair Aitcheson.

I asked him if he remembered anything about me. “I do a bit, but nothing specific… It’s so long ago now!” He said. “Did you play violin?”

Reader, I did not. But that’s okay.

Sea Of Thieves’s Forsaken Shores update adds volcanoes, rowboats and legal commerce

As the nights grow colder and the days shorter, Rare’s piratical MMO Sea Of Thieves is drawing me back with an enticingly warm-looking volcanic update, Forsaken Shores. This free new treasure-chest of content adds a new area to the map called The Devil’s Roar filled with superheated environmental hazards – the floor is literally lava. It also introduces a new kind of store encountered out on the high seas, handy little rowboats for ferrying of goods around and the usual slab of cosmetic goodies. Forsaken Shores is out now – check out the trailer below and the release notes here.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is now haunted by Hard More

With the season of spooky celebrations kicking off, Amnesia: The Dark Descent has added a Hard Mode for people who wish to suffer terrible cruelty as they explore the horrible ghost house of meat monsters. The new mode, added to 2010’s first-person spooker in a patch today, makes the meatmen more murderous and starves us of comforting light so we lose our mind (and then die as we lose our loose grip on reality). So a real good time. It’s a stark contrast to the bonus mode developers Frictional Games added to their later Soma – an easy option for explorers and sightseers. This time, they want you dead.
