Best PC gaming deals of the week – 1st February 2019

It is snowing in the Great British isles today, which can only mean one thing. The entire country has been brought to its needs by a couple of wet flakes and there’s no hope of anything being resolved whatsoever for at least another eight weeks when we’re definitely sure it’s absolutely gone with no hope of ever coming back. Am I still talking about the snow? Anyway, I think you’ll agree the only remedy to this beautifully chilly weather is to keep ourselves warm by furiously clicking on some of the best PC gaming deals of the week, yes? So pull up a chair, weary travellers and let us begin our sled ride into the land of deals. Just make sure you don’t pick up any demon pursuers on the way like the chap above, because that wouldn’t do at all.

The Foxer

The 127-cell honeycomb below is a fancy form of wordsearch in which every cell is used, and words can curl and zigzag but never overlap. Each hive foxer has a theme (some previous ones: roses, postage stamps, and The 39 Steps). Identifying this theme is a vital part of the defoxing process. Today’s puzzle is made up of 16 answers, two of which are acronyms.

The Flare Path: Happy Valley

According to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch the majority of the derailments that occurred in Britain during 2018 were caused by faulty track or rolling stock. No train left the rails because its driver was too busy wagon surfing or wild flower sniffing to notice an approaching sharp bend. Altfuture’s Early Access train sim Derail Valley encourages some deeply irresponsible habits and currently has more rough edges than a ballast stone, but I love its atmosphere and unorthodoxy, and reckon you might too, assuming you’re willing to accept a generous helping of fiction with your fact. Fallout 76 introduces new problem while re-fixing old problems

In a comedy of errors, a Fallout 76 “hotfix” patch intended to re-fix issues that Bethesda previously fixed then accidentally undid has seemingly introduced a whole new nasty problem. Something went awry during the development of this week’s Patch 5, meaning not all changes from Patch 4 carried over so suddenly lockpicking bobby pins were heavy again, among other issues. A wee “hotfix” patch launched yesterday to re-fix these, but now players are finding a whole new bug is binning some of their crafting materials. Oh dear.

New Metro Exodus footage reminds us what all the fuss was about in the first place

While the past week has seen no end of handbags about the last-minute shape-shifting of Metro Exodus into an Epic Store exclusive, and what this means for Steam and whether it’s fair to players, perhaps we have forgotten to think of the children. That is to say, the game at the heart of this controversy.

I’d long had 4A’s nuclear winter shooter mentally filed under “sure, I’ll play that at some point when I get the chance”, but watching this latest round of footage, I’ve just recategorised it under “Oh man I need to play this RIGHT NOW.”

Spinnortality is a cyberpunk management sim, out today

In the future, nothing will be able to escape the clutches of transhuman capitalists – not even management sims. That future is about 6 hours from now, when Spinnortality comes out on Steam. It puts you in charge of a company attempting to take over the world through tech, manipulation and malice, on a journey to become an immortal despot. I am sure everybody will find this very funny in fifty years time.
