Fortnite adds balloons, might be about to send off Kevin

No party is complete without balloons. Fortnite Battle Royale becomes more like a ten-year-old’s birthday do with every update – only with more machine guns. And helium balloons with enough lift to send you, a friend and your shopping trolley skywards.

Those balloons landed (floated?) with today’s update, but the Fortnite freight train of news doesn’t stop there. Epic Games have lined up another in-game event for Sunday, where we may finally see the demise of Kevin the cube. Or something. (more…)

Payday 2 checks back into Mercy Hospital in the middle of Crimefest

It feels like Overkill’s anarchic cop-smashing shooter Payday 2 has gone off the rails in the best possible way. It used to be a game about robbing banks and jewellery stores. Now it’s a crossover with a half dozen film universes with an overarching plot that’s gone a little Da Vinci Code, now with nukes going off and mercenary armies to fight. Today’s update (part of their annual Crimefest community event) brings back the No Mercy heist, a Payday 1 map set in the hospital from Left 4 Dead, upgraded, remastered and given fresh new context. Plus, the game is super cheap right now.

Spooky, kooky and musical shmup Black Bird hatches today

A strange and inky crow-like creature rampages across the land, burning and killing all. A strange dreamlike world crumbles, and a nonsense vocal chorus summons fresh defenders to the field. Black Bird, latest from Onion Games (Million Onion Hotel, Dandy Dungeon) is a trip. While it arrived a little earlier on Switch, it feels only right that this strange little shmup makes its PC debut today, as it feels a bit like Sega’s old Fantasy Zone if it were directed by 90s Tim Burton. Wrap your head around that as you watch the ferociously fowl trailer below.

Chunky retro FPS Dusk rises from early access on December 10th

Channelling the dark spirits of Quake and Blood and packing a mean shotgun, Dusk is one of a handful of new but pointedly old-school shooters I’m excited for. It’s been in early access for a while, and you can play the first two episodes now, but the last, weirdest chapter of the game now has a release date – December 10th. While the final few levels are still in production, dev David Syzmanski and publisher New Blood let me take an early tour of its netherworld. It’s good, weird and playful stuff – take a peek at it for yourself in the new Halloween’y trailer below.

Cyber-cult RTS Re-Legion prays for an early 2019 release

Being a cyberpunk cult leader in Re-Legion doesn’t look easy – for starters, where do you get so many tastefully coordinated purple robes? And then there’s the problem of assembling your flock. Unlike most real-time strategy games, Ice Code’s upcoming RTS (now due in 2019’s first quarter) makes people your primary resource. You can’t just click on a barracks and magically spawn soldiers, right? You’ve got to convert them, then have them pray, train them and then begin upgrading them in worrying ways. Take a peek at some messy laser battles in the trailer below.

See Henry Cavill in costume as Geralt for Netflix’s Witcher

There are still many questions around Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Witcher–Will it be any good? Will Geralt be in that tub? Can I import my save into the telly? Is Geralt in the tub in every episode? Will he sack off quests to play Gwent down the pub? Does Geralt count as being in the tub in every episode if that’s just in the opening credits?–but they answered one today. Netflix shared a teeny clip of Man From U.N.C.L.E. star Henry Cavill as Geralt Of Rivia in a costume & makeup test, and it answers one question. How does Cavill handle Geralt’s quaff? Like he think potions turn you on real good.
