Wot I Think: Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered

T’was 2009 that Red Faction Guerrilla first appeared, an astoundingly ballsy and destructive Martian open world game before everything was open world games. And goodness gracious, it was fantastic. You played as a freedom fighter for the Red Faction, rebelling against the terrible authoritarian energy company EDF, who control the populations of Mars. And your tasks primarily involve knocking things over. (more…)

Shenmue I & II brawling onto PC in August

In all my excitement over Yakuza finally coming to PC, I’d forgotten that its precursor series, Shenmue, was still to come. Sega today announced that Shenmue I & II, a touched-up collection of their vintage brawl-o-RPG-a-lifesim Dreamcast games, will launch on PC on August 21st. Finally, I might understand why everyone is tittering while looking for sailors. For now, I shall content myself with this new trailer introducing the re-releases. (more…)

American Truck Simulator’s Oregon is looking lovely

The Beaver State is shaping up real perty in American Truck Simulator, going by new work-in-progress videos from the first-person trucker’s Oregon expansion. I am, you may not be surprised to hear, particularly taken with its forests and rivers. I know where I’ll be moving my base of operations when the expansion launches later this year. For now, come see Oregon in these new videos. (more…)

Humble Store’s new sale is DRM-free (well, with optional Steam keys)

“Should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, ‘We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on, we’re going to survive,'” the great patriot Benjamin Franklin famously declared. “They may take our lives, but they’ll never take… OUR FREEDOM!”

Channelling Benny’s spirit, The Humble Store have launched a sale on a number of DRM-free games they stock. It’s small but offers some decent games at decent prices, and free from DRM controlling how and when you play. (more…)

Wot I Think – Starman: Tale of Light

starman header
When described, Starman: Tale of Light sounds like a back-of-the-fag-packet pitch for an episode of Doctor Who that never got commissioned: a lone astronaut navigates the abandoned remains of a civilisation, still standing but just beginning to fall to ruin, and collects magical balls of light at each place. Except I enjoyed Starman more than any of Steven Moffat’s Christmas specials. (more…)

Northgard’s new clan will slither out later this month

Northgard

The ambiguity in that headline has got me thinking about how great it’d be if Northgard‘s new clan revolved around earthworms or slugs, but sadly it isn’t to be. Along with a free update, the money-costing clan of the Snake DLC will land at some point in July. In a shocking example of stereotyping, they’ve been typecast as “the most roguish clan in Northgard’. When I was seven I couldn’t understand why everyone gave snakes such a hard time, so I wrote a story where every animal except the snake protagonist was a prick. It saddens me that society can’t seem to move on.

This update will also add a new military unit, and developers Shiro Games have been teasing their plans for future updates too. (more…)

Fallout 76’s online jerks parodied in New Vegas mod

While Fallout 76 isn’t out until November, you can experience a taste of post-apocalyptic multiplayer survival today in a new mod for Fallout: New Vegas. Modder “funkySwadling” has blessed the Mojave Wasteland with the sort of folks you might meet online: jerks camping newbies, jerks spamming terrible sounds and shouting hateful epithets, and groups of players geared to the nines who’ll be tickled by your puny weapons. The Fallout 76 Experience continues the fine tradition of mods for old games parodying newer games in the series, and I… hated the bit I played, in the way I’m supposed to? (more…)
