HyperX Pulsefire Surge review: A petite gaming mouse undermined by fussy software

HyperX Pulsefire Surge

The HyperX Pulsefire Surge has had a bit of a rocky ride to shop shelves. You might have caught a brief glimpse of it earlier in the year before it was pulled due to a fault in the design of the two main click buttons coming too close together, but now it’s back, retooled and ready for action in all its rainbow LED glory. Let’s see whether it’s been worth the wait.

ReWired is System Shock’s first ever fan-made campaign

System Shock: ReWired

Here’s just what the horrifying cyborg doctor ordered to keep System Shock fans busy while we’re waiting on the delayed remake and mysterious sequel. The original System Shock launched over 24 years ago, but only now are fans finally equipped with the tools to produce mods for the game, thanks to Nightdive Studios releasing the source code. System Shock: ReWired is its first fan-made campaign, set aboard a medical ship – the UNN Bismarck – which has fallen under SHODAN’s control.

This Battle For Middle-Earth fan remake is doomed, but gosh I want to play it

BattleforMiddleEarthremastered_header

I should say upfront that the hours me and my friend poured into The Battle for Middle-Earth were spent during the time when my critical faculties hadn’t properly come in yet. Even so, I stand by my claim that it has the best cavalry charges not just in RTSesses, but all of video games. Apart from those in its sequel, which may well be the ones I’m actually remembering.

Why the nostalgic hyperbole? Because I just found out about a fan project to remake EA’s Battle For Middle-Earth in Unreal Engine 4. The plan is for the initial release to be multiplayer only, with the addition of “destructible landscape and surroundings” plus “sophisticated physics”. The plan will not work, because EA have lawyers and they aren’t afraid to use them. But a boy can dream. (more…)

GTA Online apparent hoax announces GTA VI for 2019

“Rockstar Message: GTA VI Coming 2019” declares a GTA Online in-game notification that’s started popping up intermittently. Rockstar’s site doesn’t mention Grand Theft Auto VI, no trailer announces it, and not even a rumour had hinted at it. You’d think Rockstar would make a bigger deal about announcing a new mega-blockbuster open-world murder simulator, wouldn’t you? I would. Presumably this is just a hoax perpetrated by some nefarious hacker. For now: yes, those screenshots you’re seeing of a GTA VI announcement are real (like that ↑ one I snapped myself today); but no, that announcement itself is almost certainly not real. (more…)

FIFA 19 to disclose Ultimate Team loot box odds

EA say they plan to disclose odds of loot box items in FIFA 19 and other sport ’em ups, though it’s unclear quite how specific they’ll get. Loot boxes in FIFA? Yup, those are the ‘packs’ of random players and power-ups for FIFA’s long-running Ultimate Team mode (FUT), sold for a virtuacash or a premium microtransaction currency, which players use to build and boost a team. The packs give a vague indication of what might be inside (a bit like Mass Effect multiplayer, if that’s a more illuminating reference point to you) but doesn’t actually tell players odds on getting the specific shinies they long for – a common but still shoddy loot box practice. Steam Charts: Stale Of The Century Edition

Someone hold the poor thing's hair/tentacles back, he's awfully ill

I have reached a conclusion. Everything that’s bad is the fault of Steam sales. Two weeks ago these charts had reached a place of being a fertile ground of interesting new games and discounted classics. Today, they’re back to being mostly a miserably predictable list of games that even the undiscovered tribes of Papua New Guinea have on their Steam accounts. (more…)
