The VR believers and doubters at EVE Fanfest

It wasn’t hard to find the VR doubters at EVE Fanfest. One high profile EVE Online player told me he had no interest in CCP’s VR games but would “rather they have new teams working on VR than moving people from EVE to something like World of Darkness, which was left in the corner like a rotten apple.”

Another said he was “glad that the VR side of the business will be there to support EVE Online financially.” For a while at least, I figure it’ll be the other way around. It might seem strange to see a free-to-play MMO as the financial foundation that a studio relies on, but then CCP are a strange company and to some people their dedication to VR might seem like their strangest move yet. I spoke to VR Brand Director Ryan Geddes and CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson to find out what the future might hold, and why they believe VR is an important part of that future.

Bandai Namco grow their own Soulslike with Code Vein

Bandai Namco published From Software’s splendid Dark Souls games but, as that series ends, it seems Bamco want to make a Soulslike of their very own – one raised on anime and fizzy pop. They’ve recently announced Code Vein [official site], an action-RPG which looks Soulslike in the ways imitators often do. This one, though, is set in the not-too-distant future of our own world, where something apocalyptic has left the remains of humanity as empty monsters lusting for blood. Bamco haven’t confirmed release platforms for Code Vein yet but nearly all their big games hit PC nowadays so let’s go ahead and watch this trailer: … [visit site to read more]

The Division is having a free weekend

Happy news for fans of bullets and snow. Shooty third-person not-quite-MMO The Division [official site] is free this weekend, which is probably enough time to murder everyone in New York. As usual with these things, progress will carry over if you choose to buy it afterwards. But you can always just take in the atmosphere for the weekend and never return. It’s quite to nice plod around Hell’s Kitchen in the fog, watching dogs poop (see above) and listening to angry people shout at you from the windows.

Flight Sim World building upon MS Flight Simulator soon

Train Simulator developers Dovetail Games have announced Flight Sim World [official site], a new fly ’em up built upon the licensed guts of Microsoft Flight Sim. It will let us pilot simulated aeroplanes. Flight Sim World is due to take to the skies of Steam Early Access for a test flight later this month, but for now you can at least watch this collection of moving pictures and sound while waggling your flightstick to pretend you’re in control: … [visit site to read more]

Planetary whoosher Exo One swoops onto Kickstarter

Exo One

Remember I was excited about Exo One [official site] at Rezzed? It’s that momentum-based planet explorer game where you swoosh round as a ball and a frisbee. It has also just started a crowdfunding drive on that Kickstarter platform I hear so much about these days. OBSERVE: … [visit site to read more]

Prey launch trailer launches before Prey launch

Prey [official site] is not out until Friday but its launch trailer is already here. That might seem a silly mistake from publishers Bethesda but hey, they haven’t even realised that Prey was already the name of a seemingly unrelated first-person shooter from 2006 – a game which Bethesda themselves own the rights to! Still, it’s fine as the chunks of Prey we’ve played make Arkane Studios’ Prey seem a fine sci-fi shooter in a similar vein to their splendid Dishonored. You could watch the launch trailer now or save it for Friday to watch while wearing a paper hat and pretending you’re at the launch party. … [visit site to read more]
