Player-driven MMO Ashes of Creation wows Kickstarter

The big-money early days of video game crowdfunding may be over but lawks, look at fantasy MMORPG Ashes of Creation [official site] go! Gabbing about a world where quests can have dramatic lasting effects, crafting matters, and players can build, run, and destroy cities, Ashes of Creation hit its initial Kickstarter goal of $750,000 (£580k) in under one day. Developers Intrepid Studios say they’ve got enough money in private backing to make a basic version but they will use Kickstarter cash to fancy up their gamebicycle with stickers, reflectors, spoke beads, and clackers. They also make a curious promise to refund everyone if Ashes doesn’t come out. Check out the pitch: … [visit site to read more]

Wot I Think: Flinthook

Flinthook [official site] combines everything I loved about Rogue Legacy with far slicker platforming action, based around some of gaming’s greatest icons: grappling hooks and stylish slow motion. It’s a tremendous game that I’ve been hooked on since launch.

Nier: Automata’s arena DLC 3C3C1D119440927 released

Nier: Automata [official site] is so wonderful and complete in itself that I might be happy to skip DLC and not even play again for a fair while. I’ll return later, absolutely, but for now I might pass on the DLC released today. 3C3C1D119440927 is its name, and adding arena battles and costumes is its game. Given that this is Nier: Automata, I suspect it may be more complicated than that. I mean, beyond the fact that it has battles against the CEOs of Square Enix and PlatinumGames; that’s not even a secret. Here, have a gander at the DLC’s launch trailer: … [visit site to read more]

Annulus offers life on the inner-edge

Annulus

Annulus [itch.io site] is one of the Ludum Dare 38 games which has caught my eye. With this one it’s because the tiny world it takes place within is ring-shaped (hence the name). With that in mind you’re generally navigating the inner surface of the ring, foraging, hunting and investigating ruins. … [visit site to read more]

May the 2nd be with us: GOG launch Star Wars sale

GOG have launched a big sale on their catalogue of DRM-free Star Wars games, with discounts of 77% on everything from X-Wing to Jedi Knight. Several of them are fantastic video games. Some are good. Others are, y’know, they’re Star Wars, which is fine if you’re into that I guess. Point your star-killing peepers this-a-way. … [visit site to read more]

Darksiders 3 is real, according to apparent Amazon leak

It seems a Darksiders 3 will indeed rise from the ruins of THQ with more Apocalyptic action, as listings for it have unexpectedly popped up on Amazon. This time, Fury will be the Horseman riding out to duff up monsters. This is not officially official yet, mind, as Darksiders owner THQ Nordic haven’t announced any such game. But the Amazon listing is right there and doesn’t look like a prank. THQ Nordic have said for years that they wanted to make a third Darksiders, so here we go? … [visit site to read more]

Old Man Flurry: Chet Faliszek Leaves Valve

Hot on the heels of his hero Erik Wolpaw, Valve’s VR top-dog and grizzled bossman Chet Faliszek has announced that he’s leaving the company. Amicably, he claims, but anyone who’s ever met him will know that’s not possible. … [visit site to read more]
