$3,000 HoloLens Development Edition Due In March

While virtual reality will soon be in the hands and eyes of folks at home – pre-orders just opened for the HTC Vive, to ship in April, and the Oculus Rift launches at the end of this month – augmented reality goggles are a bit further out. While VR replaces your vision with a computer-generated world, AR is more of an overlay, making computer graphics appear in our world. Microsoft are preparing to launch the first version of their ‘HoloLens’ AR glasses to developers for $3,000, shipping on March 30th, and have shown off the games and software coming with that.

Mecha Roguelike: GearHead Updated

GearHead [official site] is a fantastic, free roguelike in which you can build and customise giant robots, and then pilot them through random missions that fit together to form a plot with a proper beginning, middle and end. I first played it over a decade ago and have always assumed we’d covered it at some point in our illustrious history. Not so.

Now is the perfect time for some coverage though because creator Joseph Hewitt has just released an update after a nine year hiatus. I may as well admit that I’m in no position to analyse the changes, not having played the game for years (I’d forgotten there was a more spacey sequel; the original is superior) but I’m excited to jump back in.

Near Death Is A Survival Sim From The Novelist Devs

The Novelist was a thoughtful hands-off Poltergeist-meets-Gone Home-type endeavor, and Near Death [official site] marks a distinct change in direction for developers Orthogonal Games. Announced yesterday, the Californian outfit’s upcoming survival-a-thon pits you against the elements and is the result of the developer’s lifelong fascination with Antarctica. Come see it in motion after the drop.

How To Skip Far Cry Primal’s Launch Videos

Far Cry Primal [official site] has now unlocked on Steam and Uplay, but, as has been the case since prehistory, you’re going to spend a lot of time staring at developer and publisher logos when you play. I’ve been fiddling with graphics settings, which occasionally necessitates a swift reload of the game, and in doing so have seen the cave-painted Ubi logo so many times that I never want to see it again. Thankfully, I don’t have to. Pushing a button won’t skip those logos but disabling them is simple enough. Instructions below.

Gotta Hatch ‘Em All: Siralim 2

The original Siralim came to Steam late, following an initial release on CleverPhones and tablets. It’s a “deep RPG with light roguelike elements that allows you to summon and customize hundreds of creatures to fight in strategic battle”, and my brief foray into its randomised dungeons convinced me that it’d be feasible to wander their tile-based corridors for hours. The sequel [official site], which will debut on PC, Mac and Linux in April, could consume a lifetime. Expect endless dungeons, with no level caps of any kind.

Premature Evaluation: Call To Arms

Every Monday, Rob Zacny calls out to the assembled masses of Early Access games but only a few are brave and hardy enough to respond to his summons.

Call to Arms [official site] has a lot to make up for. Its predecessor, Men of War: Assault Squad 2, was one of the most bitter disappointments I’ve ever had with a game.

RRAAAA! Street Fighter V Adding Rage Quit Punishment

When Street Fighter V [official site] came out a fortnight ago, it was a wee bit barebones. While some absent features are things we knew would come later, like the proper story mode, others were more surprising – like key rebinding, and punishment for rage quitting. Players being able to disconnect from matches they’re losing without ruining their ranking or win streak is… that’s a pretty big oversight, and no fun for their opponents. Capcom now say they have a solution coming, and punishments too.
