The Sunday Papers

Sundays are for programming computer people to have ambition and fear, that you might later exploit their weaknesses for crime. But first we must gather the week’s best writing about games, as tradition demoands.

War Games: Meet The World’s Best World Of Tanks Team

From a two-day event of brutality and tough but somehow sensual tank action has emerged a single victor. Wargaming [official website] has announced the winners of its official Dudes Who Are The Best Ever At Playing World Of Tanks award, better known as the Grand Finals Champions of Wargaming eSports Poland 2015.

The winner is a group of Russia-born lads called HellRaisers.

Strangethink And The World Of The Doublecat Noscope Balcony Shot

Strangethink’s Twitter feed has been an ongoing delight thanks to frequent gifs and snapshots from game development, some featuring dual-wielded neon cats.

I’m going to share with you some of my favourites. The architecture, and indeed the world, are very close to what you’ll find in the previous Strangethink outing, Secret Habitat, which involved procedurally generated art galleries. The RPS Bargain Bucket: Good Old Days

Man. Oh, man. There’s nothing quite like the early days of the video game industry, is there? When polygons were visibly polygonal and colors were an experience. Jokes aside, GOG.com, ignoring the rash of recent controversies, is doing a killer sale right now. It’s not exactly the most ground-breaking sale, but it does have so many wonderful, wonderful memories going for cheap. This week’s plushie comes again from rgk, who possesses quite the admirable collection.

(Not Our) Lo-Fi Let’s Play: Life & Death

You may have noticed Leigh Alexander’s Lo-Fi Let’s Play series, with its curious and gentle examination of weird old games, hasn’t graced our pages in several months. Leigh, you see, went off to do exciting and lovely things with Laura Hudson at Offworld, where the series continues.

Through the magic of the Internet (and the courtesy of asking nicely), we can still show you them. Leigh published the latest on Offworld on Thursday, looking at 1988 surgery sim Life & Death.
